What is PNT?

Positioning, Navigation, and Timing, commonly referred to as PNT, is a combination of technologies, systems, and processes that determine location, orientation, and time. PNT technology is the basis of your car’s navigation system; it allows your cell phone to receive and send text messages and makes online financial transactions possible.

Who Uses PNT?

Accurate positioning, navigation, and timing is necessary for the functioning of many critical infrastructure sectors. PNT technology is used for services such as telecommunications, logistics, and financial transactions. Positioning determines an object’s location and orientation, critical information for accurate navigation for all forms of transportation - over land, sea and air. Timing acquires and maintains accurate time from a timing standard such as Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) for processes such as synchronization of communication systems, accurate time stamping on financial transactions, and power transmission and distribution.
